Dorothy Day Food Pantry’s Ongoing Needs in Moorhead

Moorhead’s Dorothy Day Food Pantry serves hundreds of families each week. Operated by Churches United, it plays a vital role in supporting the local community. Pastor Devlyn Brooks, the CEO of Churches United, mentioned that they serve around 375 households weekly. With multiple people in each household, this affects about 1,500 individuals weekly.

The pantry often faces urgent needs for items like meat, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, and canned fruits and vegetables. Pastor Brooks highlighted the impact of rising grocery prices due to inflation. “When you’re feeling the pinch at the store, think about those families who are struggling even more,” he said.

Recently, Churches United shared a video on social media about their need for donations. “Our community has been strong, and we appreciate every donation that comes in,” Brooks commented. Despite the support, they often see shelves empty by the end of their distribution days.

People can donate food during operation hours: Tuesday from 12-3 p.m., Wednesday from 3-6 p.m., and Thursday from 12-3 p.m. Financial contributions are also crucial, as they allow the pantry to purchase food in bulk at discounted rates through their partnership with Great Plains Food Bank. “Cash donations go a long way,” Brooks emphasized.

According to Feeding America, food insecurity affects 9.5% of households in Minnesota, highlighting the ongoing need for resources like the Dorothy Day Food Pantry. With support from the community, they can continue to make a difference.
