University of North Alabama Men’s Golf Team Heads to Cullan Brown Collegiate

The University of North Alabama men’s golf team is gearing up for the Cullan Brown Collegiate on October 6-7 in Lexington, Kentucky. This tournament will be held at Lexington Country Club, with 36 holes played on the first day and 18 on the second.

Recent Performance

Recently, the Lions clinched the team title at the GMAC Invitational on September 23. They finished just two-over par at Limestone Springs Golf Course in Oneonta, Alabama, with a total score of 842. Junior Andrew Ferworn made headlines with an impressive final round of 63, featuring eight birdies. This score set a record for the lowest individual round in UNA’s Division I history, surpassing teammate Xing Luo’s previous record of 65.

Ferworn’s performance was remarkable; he ended the tournament with 17 birdies and rose 19 spots on the final day to finish second overall. His score of 205 is one of the best three-round totals in the program’s Division I history.

A Look Back

Last year, Ferworn also excelled at the Cullan Brown Collegiate, sharing the individual title with Kennesaw State’s Claes Borregaard. This year, he returns with even more experience and momentum.

Tournament Details

Kentucky will host 15 teams at this year’s event, featuring a mix of powerhouse and mid-major programs, including Mississippi State, Michigan, and Virginia Tech. The Lions will start their rounds at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. They’ll be paired with players from Memphis and Western Kentucky during the first rounds.

Coaching Insights

Head Coach Austin Phillips has made significant strides since taking over, recording the team’s tenth title in the Division I era. This success marks his fifth win as head coach. He’s just one away from matching his personal record of ten NCAA wins from his time at Cameron University.

Preparing for the Future

After the Cullan Brown Collegiate, the Lions will host their annual Turtle Point Invite in Killen, Alabama, on October 13.
