Hundreds of students at Lake Worth Community High School in Palm Beach County, Florida, depend on the school’s food pantry for meals. Unfortunately, this vital resource is running low. Every student at the school is classified as economically disadvantaged, and recent partnerships that helped supply food are now struggling.
Rebecca Harley, director of community partnerships at the school, remembers a time when the pantry was overflowing with food. "This room was full from wall to wall," she shared. Now, it mostly features canned goods instead of the fresh groceries that once filled the shelves.
One major contributor was No Kid Hungry, a nonprofit that has paused its support due to supply chain issues. Sky Beard, the Florida director for No Kid Hungry, noted the impact on student health. "Many kids are visiting clinics, complaining of headaches and stomach aches, often due to a lack of proper nutrition," she said.
The recent loss of partnerships has led to a dramatic drop in the number of students receiving food—from 1,350 each quarter to fewer than 500. This situation reflects a larger issue in the region; the Palm Beach County Food Bank reports that over 173,000 people in the county face hunger, including nearly 51,000 children.
Despite the struggles, there is a glimmer of hope. Harley mentioned observing students actively participating in shopping for their families, showcasing a sense of community and support. "You could sense the shift in the energy," she said.
To revive the food pantry and ensure all students have access to nutritious meals, the school is looking for donations, volunteers, and new partnerships. If you’re interested in helping, reach out to the school directly.
This situation highlights the importance of community involvement in tackling food insecurity. As we reflect on these challenges, it’s crucial to remember that partnerships and local support are key to helping students thrive.
