The Palm Beach County Food Bank is celebrating Hunger Action Month with events to support local residents facing food insecurity. Nearly 192,000 people are affected, and the food bank aims to raise awareness about this pressing issue.
Last fiscal year, the food bank distributed over 11.7 million meals to more than 193,000 individuals. They collect food from various sources, including grocery stores and farmers, and share it with over 200 local agencies such as food pantries and schools.
Jamie Kendall, CEO of the Palm Beach County Food Bank, highlights the growing need in our community. “This month reminds us of both the challenges and the generosity we see every day,” she said.
Currently, about one in nine residents in Palm Beach County are unsure of where their next meal will come from. This stark reality drives the food bank’s mission during Hunger Action Month.
On September 16, Hunger Action Day, a significant event called “Pack to Give Back” will take place at the Kravis Center. Volunteers can help package 200,000 meals throughout the day, thanks to a partnership with the venue and Lessing’s Hospitality Group.
Here’s what’s happening this month:
- Sept. 1–23: WayFM is hosting the “World’s Biggest Food Drive,” with the food bank being a beneficiary. Donations can be made at pbcfoodbank.org/way-fm.
- Sept. 16: Volunteers will gather at the Kravis Center for the “Pack to Give Back” event. That evening, both the Kravis Center and The Breakers hotel will light up in orange to draw attention to hunger issues.
- Sept. 20–21: Stormhouse Brewing in North Palm Beach will accept food and monetary donations during its Oktoberfest celebration.
Community members are also encouraged to wear orange throughout September to show their support. For more details on how to help or volunteer, visit the Palm Beach County Food Bank’s website.
Addressing food insecurity is crucial, especially as national statistics show that about 10% of households struggle with hunger. This situation reflects a larger trend and reminds us of our collective responsibility to support those in need. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference in the fight against hunger.
