Food Assistance in Gadsden County: Community Support in Action
In Havana, Florida, the need for food assistance is becoming critical. Many families are waiting for their SNAP benefits, so community members came together for a food distribution event aimed at helping those in need.
School Board Member Cathy Johnson has been organizing monthly food drives with Second Harvest for six years in front of the old Havana Northside High School. This month, they served nearly 500 families—an increase from the usual 200 to 300, illustrating just how much the need has grown.
“It’s not just about the food,” Cathy shared. “It’s about empathy and caring for our neighbors.” Volunteers eagerly helped pack and distribute boxes filled with fresh produce, meats, and canned goods. For many families, these boxes are essential for getting through the month, especially when other resources run low.
Recent statistics from the National Council on Aging reveal that 35.3% of Gadsden County residents rely on SNAP benefits. This high percentage shows how many people are affected by the ongoing delays in assistance. Local resident Denise Snead expressed her gratitude, saying, “This helps us a lot. Some days we have nothing, and this gives us everything we need.”
Cathy Johnson emphasized her commitment to the community: “As long as there’s a need, I’ll be here to help.” This spirit of giving shines through each time she hosts the events. Community Cares Food Pantry will continue to offer distributions, helping ensure no one goes hungry.
This growing community effort not only provides food but also fosters connection. It reminds us that in tough times, people can come together for support. The next food distribution is set for this Saturday at 10 a.m., offering more chances for residents to find the help they need.
