Tyler Hosts Event for World AIDS Day
In Tyler, Texas, the Tyler Area Gays+ and Special Health Resources organized an event to honor World AIDS Day and remember those lost to HIV/AIDS. Billy Diaz, president of Tyler Area Gays+, emphasized the importance of this day, which has been observed since 1988. “It’s a chance to remember everyone: those we’ve lost, those living with HIV, and those still fighting,” he said.
The event offered free STD testing and featured speakers sharing their personal journeys with the disease. According to the World Health Organization, over 40 million people were living with HIV worldwide at the end of last year. This statistic highlights the ongoing need for awareness and education.
Diaz stressed that increasing understanding about HIV can help reduce stigma. “It’s not a death sentence anymore,” he noted, pointing out the effective treatments available for those living with HIV. These therapies have advanced significantly, allowing many people to lead healthy lives.
John Eubanks, a recovery support peer specialist at Special Health Resources, shared encouraging news as well. He explained that if a pregnant person with HIV takes the right medication, their baby won’t be at risk of contracting the virus.
Local resources are available for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Special Health Resources, East Texas Cares Resource Center, and PATH offer assistance. Additionally, Tyler Area Gays+ runs a peer support group that meets monthly to provide a safe space for sharing experiences and support.
