Limited Space Alert: Final Fantasy 14 Faces Storage Challenges on PS4 Before Upcoming Expansion!

Final Fantasy 14 launched over a decade ago and quickly made its way to PlayStation 4. However, as technology evolves, PlayStation 4 may soon reach its limits for supporting this MMORPG. Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida, the game’s director, recently shared some important insights.

Yoshida expressed a desire to continue supporting older hardware. “I want to keep working with legacy systems,” he mentioned in a recent interview. However, he raised concerns about the PlayStation 4’s operating system. The hardware has limits regarding data capacity. As Final Fantasy 14 receives ongoing updates, the game is nearing those limits.

“We’ve asked Sony to increase the limits just for Final Fantasy 14, and they’ve been accommodating. But they’re reaching their limits too. While I want to support older platforms as long as possible, there will be a point where we need to end services on that hardware,” Yoshida explained. “I will communicate clearly with players about this decision.”

So far, Sony has made exceptions to help FF14 deliver new content, possible thanks to recent updates. The latest, patch 7.3, titled “The Promise of Tomorrow,” was released just this month. Yet, it’s uncertain how much more can be added moving forward.

Many gamers are curious about the next expansion. Speculation hints it could arrive as late as spring 2027. Yoshida noted that they will provide an update during the FF14 Fan Fest 2026, coinciding with the 10-year anniversary of A Realm Reborn.

Interestingly, other popular games are also dropping support for older consoles. Titles like PUBG and Genshin Impact will no longer support last-gen hardware soon. In contrast, while Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will still be available on PS4, several other major franchises have already made the switch to newer systems.

Looking back, FF14 initially launched on PS3 in 2013 but left that platform behind during the Stormblood expansion in 2017. At that time, Square Enix provided an eight-month notice before discontinuing support. It’s likely that a similar announcement may come with Update 8.0, when that arrives, particularly as we edge closer to potential next-gen consoles like the PS6.

The gaming landscape is changing rapidly, and as hardware evolves, players will have to adapt. Keeping an eye on industry trends and updates from developers is essential to stay in the loop.
