Longwood Baseball Secures 6-4 Victory Over Towson: Game Highlights & Insights

TYSONS, Va. – Longwood baseball kicked off the DMV Classic on Friday, and they delivered a strong performance. The Lancers (4-9) secured a 6-4 victory over Towson.

Guillermo Garcia, Jr. was outstanding on the mound, going 6.2 innings with only three runs allowed on six hits, earning him his second win of the season. The team had a solid offense with 10 hits and played error-free defense for the third straight game.

James Nelson had a standout night, going 3-for-4 with three hits, marking his eighth consecutive game with multiple hits. Bentley Yeatts also contributed with three hits.

GAME RECAP:

The game began slowly, with both pitchers in control. Garcia set the tone early, showcasing his best performance yet this season. He struck out five batters, helping to keep Towson at bay.

Longwood took the lead in the second inning with an RBI single from Mac Tufts, following a double by Casey Gibbs. Towson responded with runs in the third and fourth innings, but Garcia limited the damage, keeping Longwood in the game.

In the fifth inning, Bentley Yeatts hit his first collegiate home run, tying the game. The Lancers added two more runs, giving them a 4-2 lead.

Though Towson narrowed the gap to 4-3 in the seventh, Longwood answered back. Nelson’s RBI double and Mikey Urbaniak’s single pushed the score to 6-3. Towson managed one more run in the eighth, but Wyatt Bunch closed the game with a save.

COACH’S COMMENTS:

Longwood Head Coach Ray Noe praised his team’s progress. “We are showing growth with each game and starting to make crucial plays,” he said. He was especially impressed with Garcia’s performance and noted Nelson’s consistency at the plate: “He’s a real threat in our lineup and shows up ready to improve every day.”

Longwood will continue in Tysons for the second game of the DMV Classic tomorrow against George Mason at 4 p.m.
