Mackenzie Holzwart and Three Other Northern Michigan University Athletes Celebrate Basketball Achievements

MARQUETTE — Four players from Northern Michigan University’s women’s basketball team received postseason honors after the Wildcats made it to the second round of the NCAA Division II national tournament again this year.

Senior guard Mackenzie Holzwart from Howards Grove, Wisconsin, was named to the Midwest Region All-Tournament Team. In the tournament, she shone with 13 points in the opening game against Hillsdale, hitting 4 of 6 shots and 4 of 5 free throws. She also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists. Despite a loss to Ashland in the next round, Holzwart added nine points.

Over the season, she averaged 6.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Her consistency is impressive, reflecting similar averages over her 112-game career with NMU.

Junior guard Jacy Weisbrod from La Crosse, Wisconsin, was recognized as a Second Team all-region player by the Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association, and she also made the All-GLIAC First Team. Weisbrod led the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in three-pointers, ranking ninth nationally with an average of 2.9 made per game. She scored 13.4 points per game, including a standout performance where she hit seven triples in a match against Purdue Northwest.

Senior forward Abi Fraaza from Birnamwood, Wisconsin, received the GLIAC Sixth Woman of the Year award and was named to the GLIAC All-Tournament team. Despite coming off the bench 15 times, she averaged 8.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, shooting an impressive 65.3% from the field.

Junior guard Sarah Newcomer from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, earned a spot on the All-GLIAC Second Team. She recorded averages of 9.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game while ranking fifth in the conference for three-pointers made.

These recognitions highlight a growing trend in women’s college basketball where talent pools are deepening. This year’s postseason awards signify a robust performance from NMU, suggesting a promising future for the team. Given the rising emphasis on women’s sports at the collegiate level, these honors may also encourage more young athletes to pursue basketball seriously.
