Adrian Araouzou from Married At First Sight recently shared his thoughts about his relationship with Awhina Rutene after their surprising decision to continue dating post-Final Vows. Initially, they declared their intention to separate, only to change their minds but ultimately ended things for real shortly after filming.
An insider revealed that Adrian "ghosted" Awhina, which left their relationship fizzling out, but Adrian denied this. He mentioned, “Up until about a week ago, we were in regular contact.” They had chatted frequently, especially during their trips to Bali, even until the last week.
It seems the airing of the show contributed to their communication breakdown. Adrian explained, “Watching the show can be overwhelming. You relive everything, but it’s intensified. A lot of what actually happened gets lost in editing. We both needed a moment to process.” Realizing they needed space felt necessary for both of them.
Adrian clarified that their breakup wasn’t due to a lack of feelings but a pragmatic choice. He said, “It wasn’t just my decision. Awhina also recognized that it wouldn’t work. We had a mature conversation about it.” He wasn’t ready to move to Perth, and continuing the relationship felt unrealistic for both.
Despite their split, Adrian is optimistic about their friendship. He expressed, “We’re still part of each other’s lives. We just needed some time apart.” He plans to catch up with Awhina when she visits Sydney soon, affirming, “We’ll definitely be friends.”
This situation isn’t uncommon among reality show participants. Many face pressure from exposure, which can complicate relationships. According to a National Institutes of Health study, reality TV can influence personal dynamics due to the public’s scrutiny and high expectations. Thus, it’s vital for these couples to navigate their feelings responsibly, reflecting on their unique journey rather than just the portrayed version on screen.
In the world of reality TV, relationships are often tested beyond the show. As viewers, we can learn from Adrian and Awhina’s experience about the importance of communication and the reality of maintaining relationships outside the “bubble.”
