WEIRTON — Thursday night’s game was a thrilling showcase featuring Big Red’s Nylah McShan and Weir High’s Rayna Hoover. Both players were on fire right from the start, scoring the first 14 points of the match together. By the end of the game, they combined for an impressive 57 points.
While Hoover shined, McShan had strong support from her teammates. This teamwork was crucial in the outcome, as Big Red triumphed with a score of 75-50. McShan opened the scoring for her team, netting the first 13 points and maintaining a noteworthy performance throughout the game.
Her teammates chimed in too. Lucy Saccoccia scored 16 points, including six consecutive points in the second quarter that helped shift momentum in Big Red’s favor. Phynyx Fleming added 13 points to the mix.
Big Red head coach Angie Forte praised McShan’s performance, saying, “Nylah played a great game from start to finish. We started off a bit flat, but she was hustling and grabbing rebounds.”
Forte also highlighted how Saccoccia provided a spark that energized the team. After trailing early on, Big Red took control in the second quarter, scoring the first seven points and maintaining the lead thereafter.
After a slow start, Big Red found their rhythm, finishing the first half strong with an 11-3 run to lead by seven points at halftime. Dominating the second half, they scored 22 points in the second quarter and 25 in the third, which pushed their lead to 17 points going into the final quarter. In the fourth, they stretched their advantage to as much as 27 points.
Weir High coach Rick Stead acknowledged the tough game for his team. “The first two and a half quarters, we played good basketball, but then they applied some pressure, and we struggled to keep up,” he said. Stead started some younger players, which he believed performed admirably under pressure.
Hoover ended the game with 25 points for Weir High, while Eliza Utt contributed 12 points. Stead commended Hoover’s efforts and mentioned that the younger girls will continue to improve with more experience.
Big Red’s victory sets them up well for the upcoming OVAC Class 5A tournament. They currently stand third in the rankings and will face Carrollton next, while Weir High will travel to Bellaire.
