German Backpacker Found in Australian Outback
Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old German tourist, was rescued after going missing for 12 days in the Australian Outback. She was last heard from on June 29 while shopping in a small store in Beacon, a tiny town northeast of Perth.
Authorities found her van abandoned in Karroun Hill Nature Reserve, a vast area spanning over 740,000 acres. The conditions were tough—notably cold at night with temperatures dropping to around 36.7°F and no rain in sight.
On July 11, a passerby spotted Wilga wandering along a forest trail. Although she was described as being in a “fragile” state, she had no serious injuries and was promptly flown to a hospital in Perth for care. Inspector Martin Glynn from the Western Australia Police expressed gratitude for her safe return, noting that coping in such harsh conditions is no easy feat.
The search team faced immense challenges given the tricky terrain. Glynn remarked on the difficulty of spotting the van, calling it a “miracle.” The team scoured a radius around the van, but it wasn’t until a member of the public encountered Wilga that the search concluded successfully.
Previous rescue operations in harsh environments, like the case of a surfer lost at sea recently, show how quickly situations can change. While some end tragically, Wilga’s story offers a ray of hope and highlights the bravery of both the search teams and community members who keep an eye out for those in distress.
