Missouri State University has officially broken ground on a new project: the Clifton M. Smart III University Advancement Center. This $26.2 million facility is set to open in fall 2026 and will serve as a hub for engaging alumni, strengthening partnerships, and boosting philanthropic efforts.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site of the future center, located near the Davis-Harrington Welcome Center. Brent Dunn, the executive director of the Missouri State Foundation, highlighted the importance of this center. He mentioned that it symbolizes the generosity of donors and aims to enhance connections among alumni and friends.
The Missouri State Foundation has committed over $20.8 million to this project. This amount includes funding from the sale of the Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center and various donations, including a significant anonymous contribution made last April. Dunn expressed gratitude to the donors, emphasizing how their support will create a lasting legacy for future generations of students.
The new center will occupy 28,000 square feet and feature spaces dedicated to development, alumni relations, and the Missouri State Foundation and Alumni Association. Planned amenities include an event center for nearly 200 guests, conference rooms, and an outdoor courtyard.
In today’s world, where higher education institutions face tough competition for funding, such advancements can greatly impact their ability to thrive. According to a 2023 report by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, educational institutions that effectively engage with their alumni and communities see higher contributions over time. This center aims to do just that.
The Board of Governors has appointed J.E. Dunn Construction Co. as the construction manager for the project. As construction progresses, more fundraising announcements are expected, showcasing the ongoing commitment of the university community to this initiative.
The excitement surrounding the new center reflects a larger trend within higher education: schools recognizing that a strong community can lead to lasting support and success. With this advancement, Missouri State University is not just building a building; it’s building a future with strong ties to its alumni and local community.
