Morocco Faces Climate Extremes: Experts Warn of Urgent Challenges Ahead – Stay Informed with the Latest in Environment News, Climate Change, and Renewable Energy

Morocco is facing serious climate challenges. The World Meteorological Organization’s 2024 report highlights that it’s one of the most affected countries in North Africa.

The nation has struggled with intense droughts, rising temperatures, and unpredictable rainfall, leading to devastating floods. Over the past seven years, these conditions have become more severe, prompting significant human and economic losses.

Environmental expert Mostapha Aissat pointed out that the recent climate events are “unprecedented” in Moroccan history. He recalled the wildfires in 2022 that destroyed over 20,000 hectares of forest, negatively impacting both biodiversity and agriculture.

Aissat also emphasized two key indicators. First, global warming is a growing threat, and second, major polluting countries have not met their commitments to cut CO₂ emissions, as agreed in the Paris Agreement. This continued delay contributes to worsening conditions.

In addition to climate-related issues, there’s also an increasing risk of natural disasters like earthquakes. The recent quake in Al Haouz serves as a reminder of this vulnerability.

While these challenges are daunting, Aissat praised Morocco’s proactive steps, such as establishing regional stockpiles to better handle disasters. He said, “Recovery from one catastrophe often begins under the shadow of the next.”

Another expert, Ali Cherroud, added that Morocco’s diverse geography—from mountains to deserts—makes it especially prone to various disasters. The clash of cold northern currents with hot southern winds amplifies extreme weather events.

Cherroud also welcomed the new National Natural Disaster Centre in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, seeing it as a much-needed improvement in disaster management. He stressed that this model should be replicated across the country.

Experts agree that Morocco’s approach to climate change and disaster preparedness is critical. Global assessments and local experiences show that being ready for climate impacts is not just advisable—it’s essential for the nation’s future.
