The spotlight is on a challenging but vital topic.
New Zealand’s Yes Yes Yes is coming to the Vernon Performing Arts Centre on Friday, March 7, at 7 p.m.
This performance is part confession, part documentary, and part open conversation. It’s designed for young people aged 14 to 22, tackling important subjects like healthy relationships, consent, and desire.
Yes Yes Yes combines humor and innovation to address pressing issues facing youth today. It features audience interaction alongside an engaging solo performance by co-writer Karin McCracken.
A student described it as “one of the most relatable, raw portrayals of how young people navigate consent.”
This show is a collaboration between the talented duo, McCracken and Eleanor Bishop. It features deep conversations with teens from across Aotearoa-New Zealand.
“Jamie and Ari like each other. Karin and Tom do too. They might be at two separate parties, but their stories are identical. Until something happens that changes everything,” says McCracken. Her storytelling brings her own memories to life, presenting challenges many young people face.
Ari speaks directly to the audience, laying out the facts of her situation. The audience’s reactions vary, revealing how unique each experience can be even when the stories seem similar at first.
“Performing Yes Yes Yes requires me to be both an actor and a facilitator,” McCracken explains. “I connect with the audience without a barrier. Sometimes, I ask them to think about tough topics or even join me on stage. It’s a big ask, so trust is essential.”
Bishop emphasizes the power of storytelling: “When we share our experiences, we foster empathy. Theatre has a unique way of doing this because it puts a person right in front of you.”
Content Warning: The show includes discussions of sexual violence. It’s recommended for ages 14 and up.
