NCSD1 Trustees Secure $100K Grant to Boost Student Mental Health: A Game Changer for Our Schools!

CASPER, Wyo. — The Natrona County School District 1 recently approved a $100,000 grant aimed at improving student mental health. This funding comes from the Natrona Collective Health Trust, with plans to collaborate with the Jae Foundation for suicide prevention and mental health resources.

Superintendent Angela Hensley highlighted that September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. She introduced a unique program called the “boots program” from the Jae Foundation. It’s simple: put on a pair of boots, check in on someone you care about, and take a moment to reflect on your own feelings. It’s all about fostering connection and self-care.

Trustee Alex Petrino emphasized the importance of this initiative, especially on September 8, which is marked as 988 Day, reminding people of the 988 suicide and crisis hotline. He also mentioned a declaration from Gov. Mark Gordon that designates September as suicide prevention and awareness month in Wyoming. Petrino stressed that this grant reflects a statewide commitment to reducing stigma and raising awareness about mental health.

“This initiative is crucial for uniting our communities in the effort to save lives,” he said.

During the meeting, resident Jai-Ayla Sutherland spoke about bullying, including cyberbullying, and its dire effects on student mental health. She noted that one in five students reports being bullied, and a study found that nearly every student has encountered bullying in some form during the school year. LGBTQ+ students face this issue even more harshly, with twice the likelihood of being bullied.

“Thank you for addressing online bullying swiftly and supporting your staff,” Sutherland said. “Such incidents impact the entire district, creating a climate of fear and isolation.” She highlighted how bullying diminishes self-esteem, affects academic performance, and influences overall health and family relationships.

On a lighter note, the district also acknowledged community support. Local businesses like Qdoba provided $750 worth of burritos to Natrona County High School students on their first day back, while JNC Investments sponsored the Midwest football program with an $800 donation.

Clearly, fostering a supportive school environment is essential. Such initiatives not only enhance student well-being but also strengthen community ties, creating a healthier future for everyone involved.
