Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Tuesday that he is pausing a proposed 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the United States. This decision comes after a positive discussion with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick about trade relations between the two countries.
“We had a productive chat about our economic ties,” Ford said to reporters. He emphasized the importance of staying calm amid rising tensions, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to increase tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports to 50%.
This tariff announcement came just after Ford revealed his plan for the electricity surcharge, which would affect imports to states like Michigan, New York, and Minnesota. Ford also mentioned that Lutnick plans to meet with him and the U.S. trade representative on Thursday in Washington, D.C. This meeting aims to discuss the renegotiation of the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.
As these trade discussions continue, it’s clear that the economic relationship between the U.S. and Canada is under strain, making these talks all the more critical.
