KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence may soon rehire more than a dozen employees. This news follows the termination of 35 staff members earlier this year due to federal workforce reductions.
A spokesperson for U.S. Senator Jerry Moran announced that the U.S. Department of the Interior plans to bring back 14 of those employees. One notable person affected by the layoffs was Adam Strom, the women’s basketball head coach. Despite losing his job, Strom chose to continue coaching for the rest of the season without pay.
Last week, under Strom’s guidance, the team secured the Continental Athletic Conference 2025 women’s basketball title by defeating Northern New Mexico. “They could remove the coaching title, but they’re not going to remove me from the sidelines,” Strom said. He remained committed to leading the team through the postseason.
This victory has propelled Haskell to the NAIA National Women’s Basketball Tournament. They will compete in the tournament’s Naismith Quadrant against Dordt (Iowa), the top seed, on March 14 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
