INDIANAPOLIS — The Pacers Foundation, along with the Herbert Simon Family Foundation, has stepped up to help Indiana families struggling with food access during the government shutdown. They announced a generous donation of $250,000 to the new Central Indiana Food Relief Fund.
This fund offers crucial emergency support to local food banks like Gleaners Food Bank, Midwest Food Bank, and Second Helpings. United Way of Central Indiana is managing the donations, ensuring that food reaches hundreds of pantries in the area.
Rachel Simon, Chair of the Pacers Foundation, spoke passionately about the need for community support. “These are our neighbors. No one should have to worry about where their next meal will come from. It’s a blessing to help,” she said.
The urgency of addressing food insecurity is rising. Just last year, nearly 900,000 people in Indiana faced hunger, according to Feeding America. That’s about 16% of the state’s population. Many families often find it challenging to provide basic meals, especially during tough economic times.
The donation is part of the Pacers Foundation’s “Drive & Dish” initiative, which focuses on food insecurity across Indiana. This program makes healthy food more accessible through the Gleaners2Go app, allowing families to easily pick up groceries from local parks. Last year alone, it served over 4,000 households, showing the impact of community efforts.
Rachel Simon pointed out a troubling reality: “In the U.S., many people go to bed hungry. It’s unacceptable. Once you see the numbers and faces behind this issue, you realize how essential it is to step in and help.”
As the community rallies together, these contributions offer a glimmer of hope. By addressing food insecurity, local efforts can help create a stronger, more united Indiana.
