Poll Reveals Mamdani’s 19-Point Lead Over Cuomo in Thrilling NYC Mayoral Race

The upcoming New York mayoral and gubernatorial races are heating up, stirring concerns for centrist Democrats ahead of the November elections.

A recent poll by the Siena Institute reveals that in the mayoral race, Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, is leading former governor Andrew Cuomo by 19 points. Meanwhile, Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is closing the gap with incumbent Democrat Kathy Hochul in a potential 2026 governor’s race. Hochul’s lead over Stefanik has slipped from 23 points in June to just 14 points now.

Stefanik, although undecided about running, has been vocal against Hochul’s record. The poll showed that 49% of voters think it would be bad for New York if Stefanik becomes governor. Her camp argues that Hochul’s popularity is faltering, particularly among independent voters. “Voters are looking for new leadership,” said Stefanik’s executive director, Alex DeGrasse.

In New York City, 44% of registered voters back Mamdani, while only 25% support Cuomo. The support for the Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is at 12%, with the current mayor, Eric Adams, trailing at 7%. Mamdani has a strong following among younger voters, leading Cuomo by 49% among those aged 18 to 34. However, he’s struggling with older voters and has a less favorable image outside the city.

Despite the excitement, many prominent centrist Democrats, like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have yet to endorse Mamdani. Hochul, while open to working with the victor, acknowledged differences within the party.

Mamdani recently launched a week-long campaign titled “Five Boroughs Against Trump,” aimed at spotlighting threats he sees from the current presidential administration.

In an interesting twist, Cuomo is critiquing Mamdani’s stance on housing. Cuomo’s camp suggests that Mamdani, who lives in a rent-stabilized apartment, should be questioned for his income compared to his housing situation. Mamdani responded humorously, saying he “lives rent-free in [Cuomo’s] head.”
