As summer heats up, people flock to beaches, but a warning from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is urging caution. A case of flesh-eating bacteria, known as Vibrio, has been reported in Buzzards Bay, an area popular with locals and visitors alike.

Vibrio bacteria can cause serious infections. Some infections lead to necrotizing fasciitis, where flesh around an open wound deteriorates rapidly. According to health experts, about 20% of those infected may die, often within days of showing symptoms. • Cook seafood properly, especially if you have underlying health conditions.
• If you do get cut, wash it immediately with soap and clean water.

Symptoms of a Vibrio infection include diarrhea, stomach aches, fever, and unusual skin lesions. If you notice any of these signs after swimming or eating seafood, seek medical help right away.
