Reflecting on Modi 3.0: Key Achievements and Impacts After One Year

New Delhi: On June 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked one year in his third term. Let’s take a closer look at the significant developments in India over the past year.

India’s Economic Growth

India has reached an impressive milestone, becoming the fourth-largest economy in the world, surpassing Japan. NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam noted that India’s GDP grew by 7.4% in the last quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25, contributing to a total growth of 6.5%. This growth occurred despite challenges in global trade, such as the imposition of tariffs by the U.S.

Free Trade Agreement with the UK

On May 6, India and the UK announced a free trade agreement (FTA), which will eliminate duties on 99% of Indian exports. In April 2025, India also celebrated a record high Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection of ₹2.37 lakh crore, marking a 12.6% increase from the previous year.

Security Challenges and Responses

On April 22, a tragic terrorist attack claimed 26 civilian lives. In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan. The operation was a significant military response, resulting in over 100 terrorists being neutralized. Additionally, for the first time, India successfully targeted military installations of a nuclear-armed neighbor, marking a pivotal moment in military strategy.

Strained India-China Relations

Tensions with China eased somewhat after initiatives were taken for disengagement along the border. By December, both nations announced a consensus on patrolling specific areas in eastern Ladakh, concluding a prolonged military standoff that had lasted over four years.

Political Landscapes Shifting

In recent state elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) showed remarkable strength, reclaiming power in Delhi, Maharashtra, and Haryana. The BJP won decisively in Haryana and emerged as the largest party in Maharashtra.

Elections in Jammu and Kashmir

Following the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, Jammu and Kashmir held its legislative assembly elections from September 18 to October 1, 2024, with the results showing a clear victory for the INDIA alliance.

Key Legislative Developments

In December, the government proposed the One Nation, One Election Bill, aiming for simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections. Additionally, a new law to combat exam fraud was introduced, introducing severe penalties for those involved in cheating.

Significant National Projects

On June 6, PM Modi inaugurated the Chenab Bridge, the highest railway arch bridge globally. The government also launched various initiatives to expand housing, upgrade skills, and enhance healthcare for senior citizens. Notably, the health scheme under Ayushman Bharat was extended to senior citizens aged 70 and above, benefiting around six crore individuals.

Looking Ahead

India continues to focus on diversifying its economy and incorporating technology into development. A key area is the BioE3 Policy, which aims to boost biotechnology and create jobs, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable growth.

Overall, Modi’s leadership has been marked by significant economic growth, military developments, and key legislative changes, setting a dynamic course for India in the coming years.
