Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, is considering a trip to India next week, according to a report from Reuters. This could be his first visit in two years, especially as OpenAI faces some legal challenges in the country.
Altman is looking to be in New Delhi on February 5. There’s a chance he’ll meet with government leaders during this visit. However, his travel plans aren’t set in stone, and they might change as the date approaches.
OpenAI values its presence in India, which is its second-largest market for users, right after the United States. Last year, Altman visited India and had discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about how AI can enhance India’s technology landscape.
Since then, OpenAI has encountered several legal hurdles in India. In 2024, a lawsuit claimed the company violated copyright, brought forth by local news agency ANI in a New Delhi court. The case has gained attention, with various book publishers and media companies, including those owned by billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, joining in.
In response, OpenAI has stated that it relies on publicly available data and considers its practices to be covered by fair use. They also argue that Indian courts shouldn’t handle this matter.
Meanwhile, a new competitor is making waves. DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has recently overtaken OpenAI’s ChatGPT to become the top free app on Apple’s App Store in the U.S. This has sparked interest in the tech industry.
DeepSeek, founded by Liang Wenfeng, is shaking up the market with its innovative approach. Liang explains that their work is driven by curiosity about intelligence rather than purely commercial interests. He spends his time reading research, coding, and collaborating with other researchers—much like those in academic fields.
