The San Diego Food Bank has just opened a new permanent location in Vista. This facility marks a big step in helping North County residents who struggle with food insecurity.
In May, the food bank bought a 60,000-square-foot warehouse for about $13 million. Previously, they were leasing a space, which cost them more money. By owning the building, they estimate saving about $400,000 each year. This extra funding can now go toward buying more food or improving their programs.
One standout feature of the new Vista location is its client choice pantry. Here, families can pick their own groceries, including fresh produce, bread, and meats. This setup is unique to Vista and a first for the food bank in the county. “This is our client choice pantry. It truly makes us different here,” said Michael Minjares, the food bank’s director of grants management.
Since the soft opening in November, community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Casey Castillo, the CEO of the food bank, highlighted the importance of this permanent location. “It shows we’re committed to being here for generations,” he stated.
The sense of belonging to Vista is palpable among staff. Eugene Ward, the operations supervisor, mentioned how this new place feels like a staple in the community. This facility is part of the food bank’s continuous effort to combat food insecurity across San Diego County.
### A Growing Need
Food insecurity is a pressing issue in the U.S. Recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that about 10.5% of American households faced food insecurity in 2021. This situation has only gotten tougher in recent years, especially with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Experts stress that community support organizations like the San Diego Food Bank play a crucial role in addressing these challenges. They provide not just food but also a sense of hope for those in need.
The Vista location aims to enhance these services further, helping to ensure that no one in the community goes hungry. With its unique offerings and commitment to the community, the San Diego Food Bank is taking meaningful steps to foster change and support families facing hard times.
