On May 27th, Microsoft will stop supporting its Remote Desktop app for Windows. If you rely on this app for Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box, you’ll need to switch to the new Windows app.
The new Windows app launched in September and offers some great features like multimonitor support and dynamic display resolutions. It allows for easy access to cloud PCs and virtual desktops. Just a heads-up: after May 27th, 2025, using the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store to connect will be blocked.
Remember, this Remote Desktop app is different from the Remote Desktop Connection app that has been part of Windows for over 20 years. This older app will still work in Windows 11 after May 27th, letting you connect to your machines until the new app supports the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).
The mention of RDP support hints that Microsoft may eventually enable personal accounts in the new Windows app. Right now, the app only works with work or school Microsoft accounts. Microsoft aims to fully transition Windows to the cloud, enhancing AI features and providing a seamless digital experience for users.
