When you think of bustling lunch spots in Singapore, Maxwell Food Centre pops up. This hawker center is famous for classic stalls like Jin Hua Fish Head Bee Hoon, but lately, it’s attracting a younger crowd, especially with new stalls like Danlao.

Danlao opened its doors on December 5, 2022, run by four passionate hawkers, two of whom were previously chefs at Eggslut. The name Danlao means “egg guy” in Mandarin, fitting since they specialize in Hong Kong-style scrambled egg rice bowls with simple yet satisfying toppings, like luncheon meat and tomatoes.

The Menu

Danlao presents a straightforward menu featuring just five type of scrambled egg rice bowls:

  • Tomato (S$4.50)
  • Luncheon Meat (S$5)
  • Chicken Cutlet (S$6)
  • Char Siew (S$6)
  • Prawn (S$7)

This simplicity makes it easy for indecisive eaters.

My Experience

Curious to explore the menu, I went for the Tomato scrambled egg rice with added Luncheon Meat for an extra S$2. When the bowl arrived, it was a sight to behold—silky scrambled eggs bathing in homemade tomato gravy, garnished with large chunks of pan-fried luncheon meat.

The tomatoes were perfectly stewed, reminiscent of home cooking with a tangy flavor that made me crave more. They used a mix of regular and cherry tomatoes, providing a delightful variety in texture.

Next up, the scrambled eggs. Often a hit-or-miss dish at many places, Danlao nailed it. They were soft and fluffy, yet not overly runny, seasoned just right. You could enjoy them on their own or mix them with the rice.

The Luncheon Meat was thick and grilled to perfection, adding a delightful crunch and saltiness to the bowl. With juicy tomato sauce, the combination was comfort food at its best.

Moving on to the Chicken Cutlet, served over fluffy rice, it was equally impressive. Unlike many places where the chicken is dry, Danlao’s cutlet was juicy and flavorful, spiced just right. Paired with their homemade chili oil, it packed a savory kick.

Final Thoughts

Danlao is a straightforward yet satisfying place to eat, offering generous portions at reasonable prices. The focus on quality ingredients and simple execution makes it stand out. While I loved the Tomato with Luncheon Meat, the Chicken Cutlet was equally compelling.

One thing to note? A little more green could enhance the meal—some vegetables would add balance to the carb and protein-heavy dishes.

In essence, if you’re near Maxwell Food Centre and want a fulfilling, comforting meal, Danlao is a must-visit!
