Convicted rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs recently faced the judge overseeing his criminal trial. In a heartfelt letter, he asked for leniency in his sentencing set for Friday. He attributed his past wrongdoings to drug addiction and expressed remorse for his actions.
In this four-page letter, Combs apologized for the hurt he caused. He shared that he spent 13 months in a Brooklyn jail, which he believes has helped him reform. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for 10:00 AM ET.
In July, he was convicted of two prostitution charges and could potentially face up to 20 years in prison. While prosecutors are pushing for at least 11 years, Combs’ legal team hopes he could be released this month.
He specifically addressed his ex-girlfriend, singer Casandra Ventura, admitting, “I literally lost my mind.” He promised to carry the weight of his domestic violence forever. He also extended apologies to a woman who testified against him, acknowledging that he had “lost his way” due to drugs and excess.
Victims of Combs have voiced their fears. Ventura expressed concern that if he were released, he might retaliate. She believes he deserves a lengthy sentence, stating that he shows no intention of changing.
In his letter, Combs talked about teaching fellow inmates business skills and claimed to be sober for the first time in 25 years. He wrote, “The old me died in jail, and a new version of me was reborn.”
He urged the judge for mercy, not only for himself but for his seven children and elderly mother, who has recently undergone brain surgery. Combs hopes to inspire change, rather than serve as a cautionary tale.
In court on Friday, he and his lawyers plan to present a video, though its contents remain unclear. While he was acquitted of more serious charges like racketeering and sex trafficking, which could have led to life in prison, he was found guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution.
Prosecutors argue that Combs is “unrepentant” and it’s important to note that decades of abusive behavior can’t be recast as mutual issues in relationships.
