ST. LOUIS – The outdoor track and field season is off to an exciting start with the recent SLU Speed/Power Festival. Freshman Josie Seehafer from the University of Evansville shone brightly by winning the long jump with a leap of 5.37 meters. She also secured an eighth-place finish in the 400 meters, clocking in at 1:00.16.
At the WashU Distance Carnival, it was a day of personal bests for the Aces’ competitors. Chase Hayes finished the 5000 meters in 17:35.67, while Kyleigh Wolf followed at 18:55.39. Avery Stephens topped the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:42.16.
On the men’s side at the SLU festival, the 4×100 meter relay—a team of Josiah Hoehn, Myles Terry, Jose Ocampo, and Connor Shin—claimed second place with a time of 42.07 seconds. In the 100 meters, Hoehn placed sixth with a time of 11.01 seconds, and he also took fourth in the 200 meters at 22.17 seconds.
Looking at the broader context, track and field events have seen a surge in participation, especially among young athletes. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, participation in high school track and field increased by 5.3% from 2019 to 2021.
