GADSDEN, Ala. — The Richmond Spiders golf team had an impressive showing on Monday, finishing with a team score of 11-over par (299). This strong performance placed them at the top of the leaderboard at the Chris Banister Golf Classic, held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Silver Lakes. With one round left, Richmond is tied with Jacksonville State for first place, both sitting at a total of 33-over par (609). They hold a solid 18-shot lead over Samford, which is in third place at 51-over par (627).
The standout player for Richmond was sophomore Maya Beasley. She shot an even-par 72, the best score of the day. Beasley started strong, going three-under par through her first eight holes, but faced challenges on the tougher closing stretch.
“The wind really picked up on the back nine, and the last three holes were pretty intense,” Beasley noted. “Making pars felt great. It’s important to stay patient and focused on this course.”
Beasley is currently tied for fifth place individually, alongside teammate Hannah Lydic, both at 9-over (153). Freshman Katie Magner is just ahead in fourth place at 8-over par (152). Junior Olivia Wilkie is tied for 11th at 11-over par (155), while senior Christine Mandile is in 17th at 15-over par (159).
Besides the main team, three Richmond players are competing as individuals. Freshman Caroline Thompson is leading this group, sitting at 20-over par and tied for 27th. Senior Lauren Jones and sophomore Heather Appelson are tied for 32nd at 21-over par.
The final round is set to tee off at 8 AM local time, 9 AM EST. The Spiders are eager to clinch their first team title since their victory at the 2024 RiverTowne Invitational last year.
Coach Calle Barlow emphasized the importance of commitment in their game plan: “We’ve been focusing on trusting your shots, and that’s the message for tomorrow.”
