One person died after being struck by a vehicle in San Francisco on Monday. The incident occurred on Mission Street, near South Van Ness Avenue. The driver left the scene but was later found by police.
Witnesses shared their shock. Richard Conway Jr. heard the commotion and thought something serious had happened. “I figured somebody had gotten shot or run over,” he said. Allen Bobo, who works nearby, described hearing a loud thump. “I saw the man with a yellow blanket over him and he wasn’t moving,” he recounted.
Surveillance footage from a nearby business showed the victim appearing to sit on the hood of the car before falling into the street. At this point, the vehicle ran over him. Police haven’t released details on why the person was in the street or if any contact had been made before the accident.
Local residents highlighted the dangers of the area. Conway pointed out that there isn’t a crosswalk. “This is like an extension of the freeway,” he noted. Bobo added that drivers often speed in the area, especially off the freeway, making it dangerous for pedestrians.
As of now, no official arrests have been reported. However, with the increasing number of accidents involving pedestrians, this case underscores the ongoing concerns about road safety in urban areas.
Data from the Governors Highway Safety Association shows pedestrian fatalities have risen significantly in recent years, with a 54% increase between 2009 and 2018. This alarming trend emphasizes the importance of road safety measures, especially in busy cities.
