Texas A&M University System Selects Glenn Hegar as Sole Finalist for Chancellor Position

Texas A&M University has announced Glenn Hegar as the sole finalist for the chancellor position. This decision follows Chancellor John Sharp’s retirement announcement, set for June 2025. Sharp has been a steady leader for 14 years, making him the longest-serving chancellor in the school’s history.

Glenn Hegar is a familiar figure in Texas politics. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1993 and has previously served as a member of the Texas House and Senate. In 2014, he was elected Texas Comptroller and has since been re-elected in 2018 and 2022.

As comptroller, Hegar manages tax collection and oversees various financial programs that impact all Texans. The Board of Regents believes he will enhance the Texas A&M University System. Bill Mahomes, the Board Chairman, expressed confidence in Hegar’s ability to lead the system forward, highlighting its extensive reach across Texas.

Before finalizing Hegar’s appointment, there will be a 21-day comment period, as required by state law. If approved, he will succeed Sharp, bringing his strong background in public service to the role. Hegar grew up on a family farm in Hockley, Texas, and he has deep roots in the community.

Hegar has a diverse educational background, holding degrees from St. Mary’s University and the University of Arkansas. He is married to Dara, and they have three children together.

Phil Shakelford, former chair of the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce, noted that Texas politicians often excel in leadership roles at universities due to their understanding of state funding and budgets.

In a recent talk, Hegar discussed the economic impact of Texas A&M, noting it generates over $8 billion in the Brazos Valley alone. He emphasized the university’s statewide significance, with campuses and agencies impacting nearly every Texas county.
