Thrilling Showdown: Valley City State University Volleyball Narrowly Loses 3-2 to #7 Northwestern University

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Valley City State University Volleyball faced off against #7 Northwestern University at the Siouxland Invitational, but narrowly lost 3-2. With this defeat, the Vikings’ record is now 1-3, while Northwestern improves to 2-0.

The match started on a high note for the Vikings. They quickly took a 4-0 lead, thanks to an ace from JayCee Richter. They maintained control throughout the first set, winning it 25-20.

Set two was a nail-biter. Both teams traded the lead multiple times. Despite a strong effort, the Vikings lost 25-21, as Northwestern closed out the set by scoring seven of the last eight points.

In set three, the Vikings jumped to an early advantage at 3-0 and expanded that lead to 12-3 during Madden Bogenreif’s serve. They clinched the set at 25-18, looking strong once again.

However, set four was a challenge. After falling behind 3-0, the Vikings momentarily took the lead at 5-3. Unfortunately, Northwestern responded fiercely, reclaiming the lead and eventually winning 25-17.

The decisive fifth set saw the Vikings struggle early, trailing 7-3. They tried to rally but ultimately lost 15-9.

Macy Fridgen led the Vikings with 10 kills and contributed three blocks. Danielle Hagler and Morgan Freije added eight kills each. Madden Bogenreif impressed with 21 assists and 11 digs, closely followed by Gracie Schumacher with 19 assists. On defense, JayCee Richter stood out with 24 digs.

Looking ahead, the Vikings are set to play Missouri Valley College on August 23 at 10:30 a.m. in their final match of the Siouxland Invitational.
