Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is urging the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for clarity following the detention of a graduate student from the University of Minnesota by federal immigration agents.
In a recent message on X (formerly Twitter), Walz emphasized the university’s importance as a global hub for education. He noted, “We have many students studying here with visas, and we need answers.”
The detention has sparked discussions about immigration enforcement near schools. This incident comes amid a broader backdrop where the Trump administration has authorized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to conduct operations in sensitive places, including educational institutions.
The University of Minnesota confirmed that the student was arrested at an off-campus location and expressed serious concern over the incident. University president Rebecca Cunningham stated that the institution was unaware of the operation beforehand. The university has not released detailed information about the student, but it is known that he is part of the Carlson School of Management. University representatives are offering support to him.

Minnesota State Senator Doron Clark expressed his worries, saying, “I am saddened and angered that ICE is operating around the University of Minnesota. Our campuses should be a safe place for all students, staff, and visitors.”
