The two deceased firefighters were taken to Kootenai Health, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival. The condition of the surviving firefighter is currently unknown.

Idaho Governor Brad Little expressed his horror over the attack, stating, “This is a direct assault on our brave firefighters.” He urged Idahoans to keep the victims’ families in their prayers.

The sniper was believed to be concealed in the rugged terrain, using a high-powered rifle. Sheriff Norris instructed deputies to take action to neutralize the threat, noting that the assailant showed no signs of surrendering.

Residents received alerts to avoid the area surrounding Canfield Mountain, while a shelter-in-place order was initially issued. Although it was lifted later that night, authorities warned that the fire was still burning, creating ongoing safety concerns.

This incident has sparked public outrage. The Idaho House Republican Leadership issued a statement condemning the attack, expressing shock at the violence against first responders.

Coeur d’Alene, a city of about 55,000 near the Washington border, has popular hiking trails that lead into national forests. Local residents, like Bruce Deming, voiced their concerns about fire risks in the region. Deming noted the critical role of firefighters, especially during dry conditions, and lamented the chilling atmosphere created by the shooting.

As investigations continue, the FBI has been deployed to assist local law enforcement. There’s a growing need for support and protection for firefighters, who bravely face numerous hazards, from wildfires to dangerous situations like this one.
