An American father and son tragically lost their lives last month after being attacked by wasps while ziplining at an adventure park in Laos. This incident occurred on October 15 at Green Jungle Park, near the popular tourist city of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dan Owen, director of an international school in Vietnam, and his 14-year-old son Cooper were stung over 100 times. They were rushed to a local clinic and then to a provincial hospital, arriving in critical condition. Dr. Jorvue Yianouchongteng, who treated them, reported that Cooper lost consciousness and died shortly after. Dan was awake for a while but succumbed about three hours later.
Both father and son experienced severe anaphylactic shock from the stings. However, the specific type of wasp involved remains unclear. The infamous Asian giant hornet, often called the “murder hornet,” is found in the region, but several other wasp species also inhabit Laos.
Experts highlight that this incident is a grim reminder of the dangers associated with outdoor activities. Dr. Phanomsay Phakan, who treated the victims first, noted, “It was very, very painful… I had never seen it as bad as that.” This case reinforces the importance of awareness regarding allergic reactions to insect stings.
In the U.S., efforts to deal with the Asian giant hornet have intensified. Federal officials in Washington state confirmed sightings in 2019, leading to aggressive eradication campaigns. Recent reports indicate that these hornets have been successfully eliminated in parts of the U.S., but vigilance remains crucial.
