Transforming Local Soil: Charlotte Artist Crafts Stunning Earth Day Sculpture from Native Materials

April is here, and that means it’s Earth Month! In Charlotte, the fourth annual Earth Day celebration is just around the corner. This exciting event will showcase two themed films and the PBS Rootle Roadster Tour, filled with fun learning stations for kids.

One of the highlights is artist Crista Cammaroto’s interactive installation, Terra Forma. She focuses on using local materials to create her art, connecting people with the environment. Crista has been working on this project for years, blending art with environmental awareness.

You can see her hard work as she molds clay and adds natural elements. Recently, she got her hands messy with turmeric and beet powder, using daffodil leaves in her designs. Crista believes strongly in sourcing materials from her surroundings. “I try to get things as locally as possible,” she shared.

Zachary Turner from WFAE joined her to explore the art-making process. Together, they delved into nature’s treasures: flowers, leaves, and clay. Crista’s work often features interesting shapes inspired by nature, like salamanders, which are sensitive to environmental changes due to their porous skin. She hopes to evoke a sense of responsibility and connection to the earth through her artwork.

The event will also allow participants to engage in hands-on activities. Jessica Carter, a volunteer sculptor, explained that areas of sand will encourage people to explore and create their own pieces using natural materials. “They’ll get to play with different elements of nature and get their senses involved,” she said.

Crista views Earth Day as a vital moment to raise awareness: “It’s my most important holiday… finally, people are paying attention to the earth that sustains us.” She hopes attendees will leave with valuable knowledge from organizations striving to make a positive impact on the planet.

Environmental conservation is a pressing topic today. In a recent survey by Statista, 73% of respondents reported that they consider sustainability important when making personal choices, reflecting a growing trend toward eco-friendliness in everyday life.
