Last Sunday, Ocean Grove Main Beach turned into a hub of creativity and community spirit. The ‘Protect What You Love’ Sand Sculpting Competition brought families together for a fun-filled morning.
Laura Billings, a volunteer organizer with Parents for Climate Geelong, noted the event sparked great conversations. “It reminded many of us of our childhood. It was a chance to create and play in the sand again,” she shared.
Families and kids of all ages got involved, crafting unique sand sculptures despite the strong winds. “It was thrilling to see everyone laughing and competing,” Billings said.
The theme of the day focused on protecting our environment. Billings explained, “We want to inspire conversations about climate action and instill a sense of stewardship in our kids. It’s all about caring for the world we live in.”
Connecting with the sand and nature was a foundational part of the day. “Creating art from sand helps us appreciate our surroundings and encourages us to take care of this beautiful planet,” she added.
Overall, the competition was a celebration of creativity, community connections, and advocacy for our environment.
