OpenAI and Perplexity are aware of these risks. OpenAI’s Chief Information Security Officer, Dane Stuckey, publicly acknowledged how prompt injection poses ongoing challenges. Perplexity has recognized the need for a comprehensive rethink of security to tackle these threats.
Both companies are implementing safeguards, like “logged out mode,” which limits the agent’s ability to access sensitive data, and detection systems that aim to identify prompt injection attacks in real-time. However, experts warn that these measures do not ensure complete safety.
Steve Grobman, CTO at McAfee, states, “It’s a cat and mouse game.” He explains that as prompt injection techniques evolve, so must the defenses against them. For example, attackers have moved from basic text instructions to more complex methods, such as hiding commands in images.
To protect themselves, users should adopt specific strategies. Security expert Rachel Tobac suggests using unique passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication. She also recommends limiting the access these AI tools have, keeping them away from sensitive accounts tied to banking or health information.
