Duolingo is stepping into the world of chess. Soon, users will be able to learn this classic game right through the app, alongside language lessons.

The new chess course will feature fun puzzles. For example, you might practice moving a knight in its unique “L” shape or work on checkmating a king trapped in a corner. There will also be chances to play short matches or full games against Duolingo’s character, Oscar, who will coach you through each lesson.

During a recent demo, I got a sneak peek at the chess course. It looks exciting! Edwin Bodge, a group product manager at Duolingo, told The Verge that their goal is to make chess accessible for everyone. The course will cater to various skill levels, so whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, you can join in.

This move to include chess is part of Duolingo’s broader strategy. In addition to language learning, they have courses in subjects like music and math. When I asked about the possibility of adding other games, Sammi Siegel, a staff software engineer, said they are evaluating the chess launch first before making further plans.

The chess course is currently in beta testing for iOS users in English. Monica Earle, Duolingo’s PR director, estimates that in four to six weeks, more iOS users will get the chance to try it. After that, the course will be available on Android and in more languages.

This initiative reflects a growing trend in education technology. A recent survey showed that 70% of educators believe that gamifying learning can enhance student engagement. As tech companies continue to innovate, integrating gaming elements like chess could open new doors for skill acquisition.
