Knowledge Exchange on Climate Finance between Indonesia and Vietnam
On January 13, 2025, Indonesia and Vietnam held a significant meeting to share knowledge on environmental and climate finance. This event was organized by CIFOR-ICRAF, with representatives from Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE) and local authorities from Da Nang City discussing crucial aspects of Indonesia’s approach.
The focus was on Indonesia’s management style in areas like REDD+ financing, benefit-sharing, community forestry, and methods for restoring peatlands. Attendees also delved into how local governments and communities engage in forest carbon projects. This exchange provided valuable insights and strategies that Vietnam can utilize to enhance its own climate finance framework.
CIFOR-ICRAF in Vietnam is actively promoting climate-smart forestry and agroforestry. Collaborating with organizations like WWF Vietnam and CARE Canada, they’re working to bolster forest management and prepare Vietnam for international carbon markets. A key aim of their efforts is to ensure that women’s voices are included and that local communities benefit from these initiatives.
Recent statistics show that as of 2023, over 80% of global forests are under some form of management, but only 34% are recognized for their carbon storage capabilities. Strengthening community involvement could improve these numbers significantly, leading to better environmental outcomes.
This collaboration highlights the importance of shared experiences in climate finance, showcasing how knowledge transfer can lead to impactful changes in environmental policies and practices.
