The Vice-Chancellor of Hensard University in Bayelsa, Prof. Dileep Kumar, recently stressed the importance of restoring mangroves as a way to combat climate change in Nigeria. He shared his insights during a workshop focused on training local women and youth in mangrove restoration.
Kumar praised organizations like the Climate and Sustainable Development Network (CSDevNet) and the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) for their efforts in promoting environmental education. He emphasized that the workshop aimed to empower participants with skills that could lead to meaningful change. “Education isn’t just about gaining knowledge,” he remarked. “It’s about creating opportunities.”
One key goal was to train 100 individuals—30 women and 70 students—in effective mangrove restoration techniques. Prof. Aduabobo Ibitoru-Hart from CSDevNet highlighted the critical role mangroves play in protecting coastal areas. “They shield us from erosion, support biodiversity, and help fight climate change,” he noted. However, he pointed out the threats posed by deforestation and unsustainable practices.
This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s climate goals, particularly the Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and gender equality. Focusing on women in training programs not only promotes equity but also acknowledges their crucial role in conservation efforts.
According to recent statistics from the UN, mangrove forests are disappearing at a rate of about 1% per year, emphasizing the urgent need for restoration efforts. These ecosystems provide numerous benefits, from carbon storage to habitat for wildlife.
Mr. Stephen Abu, the National Coordinator for CSDevNet, reinforced that addressing climate change requires action now. He mentioned that planting trees is a practical step everyone can take, along with adopting behaviors that support environmental restoration.
The workshop represents a hopeful step in a larger movement toward sustainability, showcasing community empowerment and education as keys to navigating the climate crisis. Through collaboration and focused efforts, there’s potential to achieve lasting environmental change.
