The United States is particularly eyeing an expansion in nuclear energy. The government has plans to increase nuclear electricity production from 100 gigawatts to 400 gigawatts by 2050, driven by a rising demand for electricity and growing bipartisan support.

At the 2023 climate conference in the UAE, 22 countries committed to tripling nuclear power use by 2050. This number grew to 28 nations by 2024 in Azerbaijan, highlighting a shift in how leaders view nuclear energy as a reliable alternative to fossil fuels. Notable supporters include Bill Gates, advocating for nuclear projects as part of a cleaner energy future.

So, why is nuclear energy gaining traction? Renewable sources like solar and wind can only produce electricity when the sun shines or the wind blows. This means they often can’t meet the constant demand for energy. On the flip side, nuclear energy provides a stable, around-the-clock power supply. It releases minimal greenhouse gases during operation, making it an attractive option for large economies trying to decarbonize.

Tech giants are also turning to nuclear energy to power their data centers, especially given the demands of artificial intelligence applications. While nuclear energy is praised for its low emissions, it’s crucial to acknowledge its lifecycle emissions—from construction to waste disposal. Still, the direct operational emissions are significantly lower than fossil fuels.

However, nuclear power isn’t without its challenges. The risks of accidents and potential radiation leaks are glaring drawbacks. Incidents like Fukushima in 2011 led to widespread reactor shutdowns in Japan and triggered a move away from nuclear energy in Germany and other European countries. The Chernobyl disaster in 1986 remains a haunting reminder of what can go wrong, resulting in long-term health impacts for thousands.

Cost and time overruns further complicate nuclear projects. Strict regulations often mean new plants take years longer to build and cost significantly more than planned. Also, the issue of how to safely dispose of nuclear waste—a hazardous material for thousands of years—remains unresolved. Experts say that while properly managed nuclear plants pose minimal risk of radiation, the question of waste disposal continues to loom large.

Despite these challenges, many experts argue that nuclear power is essential for fast-tracking decarbonization efforts. As the world seeks reliable energy sources that don’t contribute to climate change, nuclear energy could play a leading role in achieving global climate goals.

This evolving stance on nuclear energy mirrors historical shifts in energy policy and public perception. Just as coal was once celebrated before its impacts became clear, the current fascination with renewables has its own limitations.
