UNLV is known for its strong academics and student success, thanks in part to its accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). This process ensures that the university meets important education standards, guaranteeing that students receive a quality education.
The NWCCU serves colleges in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and British Columbia. In April 2025, a team from the NWCCU will visit UNLV to conduct an in-depth evaluation. They will meet with students, faculty, and staff to assess how well the university meets its educational goals.
“This accreditation visit is an important milestone for us,” said Chris Heavey, UNLV’s Officer in Charge. “We want to show the evaluators our commitment to high academic standards and continuous improvement.”
This upcoming visit is the final step in a seven-year accreditation cycle. Before achieving full accreditation, universities often undergo an applicant phase and a candidate phase. These phases last from a few years to up to five years before they can officially claim accreditation. During the cycle, the NWCCU reviews the institution’s progress and looks at how well it meets its mission, enhances operations, and supports student success.
Accreditation plays a vital role in accessing federal funds for both students and faculty. It is also a way to demonstrate that UNLV is dedicated to providing high-quality education. “Accreditation drives excellence in our programs, fostering an ongoing culture of improvement,” said Kate Korgan, the university’s Provost.
What’s noteworthy is that UNLV enters this review phase with no current recommendations for improvement. This positions the university to highlight its strengths and achievements, and it allows evaluators to focus on its successes.
The NWCCU visit also offers a chance for the UNLV community to engage. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to participate by attending forums when the evaluators are on campus. Lindsay Couzens, associate vice provost, noted that these forums are essential for gathering campus input. “We want the evaluators to hear directly from our community about our accomplishments and challenges,” she said.
In a recent survey by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, about 85% of students indicated that they believe accreditation is essential for maintaining educational quality. This sentiment underscores the importance of the NWCCU process and how deeply it influences student experiences.
Additionally, faculty members are encouraged to engage with the accreditation process through the UNLV Accreditation Award and Mission Fulfillment Grant, which supports projects that align with the university’s strategic goals. Winners will have the opportunity to present their work to the NWCCU evaluators.
