Winters Scott had many options when it came to choosing a college. With letters pouring in from schools all over the country, she finally settled on Maryland. What attracted her was the school’s friendly atmosphere.

One memorable moment for her was attending a game against USC on November 30, 1985. Watching Cheryl Miller dominate the court with 36 points and 13 rebounds was inspiring. Winters Scott admired Miller and even got to meet her and Maryland’s basketball star, Len Bias, that day.

Despite her excitement, it wasn’t until she visited campus during her senior year that she truly felt at home. During her visit, she connected with Monica Gannon, a forward on the women’s team from 1982 to 1986. The two shared laughs late into the night, a memory Winters Scott cherishes.

She recalled one funny incident: “We were at a football game in the student section when I got hit in the head with a plastic cup. It was so silly that it made everyone laugh. I felt like I could be myself there.”

Among her many moments at Maryland, one stands out from her junior year in 1989. The Terps were playing Texas, and with just 22 seconds left, she made a crucial play. After grabbing a rebound and getting fouled, she stepped up to the free-throw line for the first time that game. She sank both shots, putting Maryland ahead for a 79-71 victory and securing their place in the Final Four.

“Making those free throws meant a lot,” she said. “It wasn’t just about scoring; it felt good to contribute to the win.”

Her journey is a reminder of the importance of school spirit and teamwork in sports. According to a recent survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations, nearly 8 million high school students participate in sports, highlighting the lasting impact of these experiences on young athletes.
