A significant heat wave is sweeping across the West, smashing records in California and Arizona. Temperatures reached astounding highs earlier this week, with many areas experiencing summer-like conditions in March.
Around 38 million people in Southern California and the Desert Southwest are under heat alerts. A large heat dome is the culprit, sitting firmly over the region.
In Palm Springs, California, the thermometer peaked at 107°F, a new record for March. Indio hit 108°F, another milestone. Riverside also broke records with temps reaching 101°F. Across the state, cities like Anaheim, Sacramento, and San Diego recorded highs that broke daily records set just the day before.
Over in Arizona, Martinez Lake reached a remarkable 110°F, marking the highest March temperature ever recorded in the U.S. Phoenix had its earliest triple-digit day, hitting 102°F. According to the National Weather Service, this is the earliest occurrence of 100°F in Phoenix since 1988, showcasing a worrying trend where heat waves arrive earlier each year.
Las Vegas didn’t escape either, with temperatures soaring to 95°F, a new record for March. Other areas, like Boise in Idaho, felt unusual warmth too, hitting 80°F. This is only the second time in recorded history that Boise has reached such highs during winter.
The heat wave is expected to expand further east, bringing scorching temperatures to Texas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. By the weekend, highs could soar into the upper 90s and into the 100s in several locations.
Experts warn that these heat waves are becoming more common due to climate change, which creates conditions that make heat events more intense and frequent. According to a recent study, heat waves have increased in duration and intensity over the last few decades, signaling significant shifts in our climate patterns.
As residents brace for this heat, the risks rise. With high temperatures combined with dry conditions, fire hazards are escalating, particularly in Colorado. Forecasts predict highs of 84°F in Denver, increasing the threat of wildfires in the area.
