Unprecedented Honeybee Die-Off Sparks USDA Response: Food Assistance Initiatives Unveiled – AG Information Network of the West

This year, many commercial beekeepers faced a shocking crisis. Their honeybee colonies experienced severe collapse, leading experts to call it the worst die-off in U.S. history. Some beekeepers reported losing an astonishing 70 to 100% of their colonies.

A recent study by Project Apis m highlights the seriousness of this situation. Researchers warn that these bee losses could threaten food security. Honeybees are vital for pollination, and without them, many crops may struggle to grow. The estimated financial hit from this crisis exceeds $139 million.

In response to the challenges farmers and communities face, the USDA plans to purchase up to $67 million in fresh seafood, fruits, and vegetables. These products will support food banks and nutrition programs across the country. This initiative stems from the Agriculture Act of 1935 and aims to assist both farmers and those in need.

So far, the USDA’s efforts in the current fiscal year have added up to more than $600 million in purchases to aid the charitable feeding network.

In another report, the USDA’s Cattle on Feed data revealed a slight decline in cattle numbers and marketings, down by two to three percent in May. As of May 1, there were about 11.4 million cattle and calves in feedlots with a capacity of over 1,000. Meanwhile, the Cold Storage Report indicated that red meat supplies increased by 5% from last month, yet they are down 6% compared to this time last year.

This combination of challenges in agriculture highlights the interconnectedness of our food system. With bees struggling and cattle numbers fluctuating, it’s clear that both farmers and consumers will feel the impact.
