Harrison, Michigan, is facing a tough situation with a beloved local food pantry. The Compassion Counts Food Pantry, serving the community for 17 years, may close by the end of October.

The pantry relies on The Gathering United Methodist Church for support. Sadly, the church is shutting down due to financial issues. “This is heartbreaking,” says Tammy Wyse, the pantry’s assistant director. She emphasizes that the pantry not only helps those in need but is also a source of joy for its volunteers.

The pantry operates on a tight budget, relying solely on donations and volunteers. While they get much of their food this way, some items still need to be purchased. Without the church’s assistance, operations could come to a halt. Wyse reveals, “We struggle just to buy the food for families.”

Word about the potential closure is spreading fast. “We’re trying not to panic everyone, but we have a sign on our door stating October 30th is our last day. Many are devastated. They ask, ‘What are we going to do?’” she explains.

The pantry serves as a critical resource in the area. Last month, they helped over 1,200 people, including 400 families. “We have new sign-ups every time we open, showing a huge need,” explains Wyse. Many local families and even homeless individuals rely on this service.

Attempts to find another home for the pantry have been tough. “We’ve reached out to other organizations, but they just don’t have the space or resources,” Wyse adds.

For volunteers like Amanda Morgan, this pantry feels like a family. “We spend more time together here than we do outside of this place. It’s truly special,” she says. She voices concerns about what would happen to the families who count on the pantry. “A lot of families could go hungry. It’s tough for our community.”

Recent statistics underline the growing need for such facilities. According to Feeding America, around 34 million people in the U.S. experienced food insecurity in 2021 alone. This reality makes the situation in Harrison more urgent.
