Wales-Based Company Takes Action: TikTok Shop Fakes Lead to Product Recall

Lucie Macleod, a 25-year-old entrepreneur from Pembrokeshire, is facing a tough situation with her haircare brand, Hair Syrup. She recently pulled her products from TikTok Shop due to a rise in counterfeit goods. This move came after her company saw nearly half its revenue from TikTok last year. This year, that number dropped to just a quarter.

Lucie shared that she was making millions through TikTok, but the emergence of fake products hurt her brand. Customers were mistakenly buying these knock-offs, leading to complaints and confusion. “People posted online saying they would never buy from us again,” she said.

The ease of selling on TikTok Shop also posed a challenge. Lucie explained that sellers just needed to present a seemingly forged approval letter to list their products. “It was a frustrating process to have these fakes removed,” she added. Even when she managed to get the counterfeits taken down, the ordeal highlighted TikTok’s lack of effective customer service, relying almost entirely on AI for support.

This experience isn’t unique. Phil Lewis, the director general of the Anti-Counterfeiting Group, warns that counterfeit products can pose real dangers. He noted cases where counterfeiters used toxic ingredients, mixing them in industrial machines. As online shopping grows, so does the risk of encountering these dangerous knock-offs.

Lucie has since shifted her sales to a traditional cosmetic retailer. She believes that while TikTok Shop can be a marketplace, consumers might return to more reliable platforms. “We’ve redirected customers to sites that sell authentic products,” she said.

With growing discussions about online safety, consumers are advised to be cautious. The rise in counterfeit goods on platforms like TikTok demands more robust measures from these companies. Stricter verification processes and better customer service could help protect both businesses and buyers.
