New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has stirred up controversy by announcing a 25% tariff on Indian imports, along with additional penalties. Congress MP Manish Tewari has interpreted this as a significant recognition of India’s unique position in global politics.
In a recent post, Tewari emphasized that this recognition ties back to India’s foreign policy principles that have been in place since the era of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. He mentioned that the policies of non-alignment and self-reliance, championed by past leaders, have shaped India’s ability to engage with global powers on its own terms.
Tewari dismissed concerns over the tariffs affecting India’s strategic independence built over decades, saying it wouldn’t make much difference. However, he noted it could impact broader Indo-US relations. Similarly, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what he sees as a lack of assertiveness against the US President, pointing out that praise has not shielded India from tariffs.
Trump’s announcement on his Truth Social account highlighted frustrations over India’s high tariffs and its reliance on Russian military and energy supplies, which he described as counterproductive amid current tensions. He argued that this situation has limited business opportunities between the US and India.
This shift in trade policies reflects larger global trends. Recent data from the World Bank shows that global trade relations are rapidly evolving, with countries reassessing their partnerships and dependencies. For instance, reports indicate a growing trend of nations seeking more localized supply chains, especially in light of geopolitical tensions.
As the situation unfolds, analysts suggest that India’s diplomatic approach may need to adapt further to maintain healthy ties with major powers while safeguarding its interests. The unfolding story highlights the complexities of international relationships in a changing world.
