TAMPA – Change is in the air for the Yankees.
Hal Steinbrenner announced a big shift: the team is lifting its long-time rule against facial hair. Going forward, “well-groomed beards” will be allowed.
In a recent statement, Steinbrenner shared that he talked to many former and current Yankees to gather their thoughts on the grooming policy. He valued their feedback and indicated that this decision has been in the works for some time. “It is the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar comfort of our former policy,” he said.
The new rule gives players more freedom. Before, only mustaches were permitted. Now, we’ll see how “well-groomed” is defined, but at least beards will be making an appearance on the field.
Recently, some players had been testing the limits of the old policy, sporting five o’clock shadows. New closer Devin Williams, for example, wasn’t happy about having to shave his beard on the first day of workouts and kept it until the very last moment. It seems many players are eager for this new era of grooming rules.
